Mick's wormery

by Mick Colein
(stratford upon avon)

Hi Rick
I have been thinking for some time now about getting a wormery but decided to make my own earlier this week.

I could have bought a cheap plastic one for about £30, I didn't like the look of any to be honest and they looked what they were - cheap and nasty.

I bought 3 plastic containers the sort that people put under their beds for storage, 3 for £10 and they seemed about the right size for what I wanted.

Went to the builder’s merchants and bought 3 x 4.6m lengths of gravel board, £15 for the 3.

Ordered a tap off the internet, cost was £3.50 including postage.

Total cost, not counting screws (normally plenty of screws in my workshop)and a couple of old hinges was about the £30 mark.

It all breaks down in to layers if I ever need to do that and one day I will sure to want to.

The bottom layer has the tap fitted through onto the first plastic box this is so I can siphon off the worm tea as it’s laughingly called, considering it’s the worms urine but it makes excellent fertilizer.

The 2 other plastic box will lift out as and when required.

I've started to put in a mix of green and brown materials and will let that settle for a week and then order the tiger worms next week, 300 of the little devils for about £7 then fingers crossed they can go to work making the compost.

Did I mention I made it to look like a beehive?

carpenter?
by: mick

Thanks for the nice comment Andrew, No I'm not a carpenter but it is one of my many hobbies.

Anyone can make simple measurements and it doesn't take that much effort to saw in a straight line and basically everything is no more than a simple box.

Measure twice cut once and you cant go far wrong.

2 sugars please.

Genius!
by: Rick from CGFF

Ni Mick,
Loving it! what a fab bit of kit, and all for the same price as a cheap and nasty one. Now that's my kind of improvisation!

Be interesting to hear how you get on with it.

Thanks for sharing.
Rick
