Micks tip for Liquid Fertilizer

by Mick Colein
(Stratford on Avon UK)

Hi Rick
I thought I would pass on to yourself and any readers how to make a liquid fertilizer for all things green ie lettuce brassica's beans etc.

Dead easy to make collect some nettle tops preferably the new shoots at the top they are the ones with the most nutrients in, dont forget your gloves though.

I picked about 12 tops then chopped them in to smallish pieces put them in a bucket or bowl and added approx 2 pints of water.

Give them a stir and leave for a week, strain off the nettles and pour the now black liquid into a plastic bottle or any suitable container.

Use approx 1/4 of cupful with a full watering can of water and hey presto the jobs a good un.
High in nitrogeni its free and its organic I cant think of anything better for a gardener.

Tomato fertilizer can be made the same way but using sheep dung instead of nettles......it smells a bit though.

Nettles
by: Anonymous

Sounds great.
Many years ago I experimented with trying to make an 'organic' pesticide from nettles. Shredded up loads of the plants, soaked them in a bucket of water, put them in a warm shed then forgot about them. The end result looked like something from the special effect department of Doctor Who but it did keep the insects away...and just about every living thing for some distance.

by: Rick from CGFF

Hi Mick,
Thanks for sharing this great tip - that's what I like to her - so cheap it's free :o)

I'll have to give this a go.
Thanks again
Rick
