First timer

by Joe Wheeler
(Essex)

This will be the first time I start growing food apart from when I was a child my dad let me have a patch to grow strawberries. Anyway this year I will be growing:

Onions, Beetroot, Red and green peppers, Broccoli, Parsnips, carrots, Cabbage, Tomatoes, Mustard Cress, some potatoes, Raspberries, blackcurrents and a whole load of nice flowers and I am looking for a nice plum or pear tree to plant which I have seen in homebase. I know I'm a little late but not too late I hope, just had bad weather plus I have been really busy, and on top of that, ill, but all seems to be better now and its time for me to crack on.

I have to tidy my garden first but have a whole fortnight starting tomorrow to spend on it.

I would like to thank Rick for all of the information and videos on this website. A great help!

It's great that you're getting into this gardening thing. Once you start you will find that it becomes addictive and beneficial. There's nothing better than eating produce from your own garden. I'm convinced that getting your hands dirty actually is good for mental well being.

Good luck with your growing.

My garden is getting there
by: Joe Wheeler

Planted flowers, a cherry tree, some strawberry plants and all is going well... iv managed to clean up all the mess and tidy and its all looking great now!

Iv managed to plant in some containers:

Sweetcorn, Broadbeans, Tiny Toms, Chilli Peppers, Traffic light peppers, Carrots, Mini carrot paris, Brocolli, basil, parsnips, beetroot, Radish's, leeks, Mustard cress, rocket salad, Aubergines, lettuce, blackcurrant and raspberry bushes and parsley... all is coming along well but the peppers are a bit slow, the peppers and aubergines are kept indoors.

Nice to see life appearing :) im so glad I stopped being lazy and started working on the garden and find it a really nice hobby, relaxing, makes my mind feel more natural and back to nature and makes me feel happier and at ease that I am more prepared if anything bad happens in the outside world.

not too late at all
by: Esmealda

Most of my planting has yet to be done- I think you're doing just fine! Now if you were starting in july... THAT would be a liitle late, but STILL, not impossible. As long as you have some spitfire and you don't live in antarctica, you can always grow something to eat! Good fortunes!

Not too late to get started!
by: Rick @ Container-gardening-For-Food.com

Hi Joe,
Great blog entry - sounds like you've really got your work cut out this year.

Fortunately you are no too late, in fact you still have to wait a bit longer to plant many of the things on your list.

If you are like me, having a large number of different seeds to plant can seem a bit daunting. Fortunately I managed to figure out a way of planning ahead to stay on top of what needs planting and when. If you click on the "Buying Seeds" tab on this website (upper left margin), I have added a quick video to that page called "Organising your seeds" and it might be beneficial to you.

I'm glad you have found the website and videos to be useful. Good luck with it all , and be sure to check back from time to time and give us updates on how you are doing :o)

Cheers
Rick
