Chitting Potatoes in the Light or in the Dark? - Confusion resolved....

by Rick

Sprouting (chitting)

Sprouting (chitting) "Rocket" Spuds

A quick note about Chitting your potatoes.
There seems to be a lot of contention about whether to let them sprout in the daylight or in the dark.

To find out once and for all, I did a little experiment. I stood my seed potatoes up in egg boxes, then placed half of them on the windowsill in the light, and half of them in the under-stairs cupboard where it was totally dark.

A couple of weeks later, I put them side-by-side to compare the difference.

The potatoes that were left to chit in the dark did considerably better than the potatoes left in the light.

So my conclusion is: Chit your potatoes in a cool DARK place.

If you chit your potatoes in the dark you are more likely to get long spindly white shoots which are easily damaged when planting out. The idea is to get short firm shoots but this obviously depends on the length of chitting time as well. It's also worth mentioning that you don't actually need to chit them, especially maincrop varieties as they'll grow anyway when you put them in the soil.

Thank you for the information

Hello, I was trying to chit my potatoes in the daylight and after three weeks they did not appear to be doing anything. I will put them in the dark and see if this helps.
Thanks
